VoIP: Voice over IP: what is it and what can it do for my company?

Definition: Voice over Internet Protocol: free internet telephony with the computer. You can call computer to computer (with both parties using the same software, free within your normal Internet access) or computer to telephone (reduced rates). You need a microphone & speaker (or a headset) and a download of free software, such as www.skype.com. After installation, the system asks you to choose a user name (similar to Messenger), and you can send a request to other users to include you in their contact list. Then, plug in your headset in your PC (in the right socket!) choose the contact and press the "dial" button, the computer will establish the connection. Some software packages also offer chat, file transfers and conference calls. Mind you, it is not always a secure network, this depends on the supplier.

Result: greatly reduced telephone costs between branch offices and staff & clients.
The software converts your analog audio signals into digital data which is then transmitted over the Internet. You are bypassing your telephone company service because you are using the Computer network instead. Another consequence: big telephone providers will be setting up similar services in order not to miss out to this new competition. VoIP may well one day replace conventional telephone systems altogether. |

Question : if the software and the telephone calls are free, how do these Voice-over-IP companies make money? Answer: They want to sell you extra services, for example: 10 Euros buy you 10 hours talk between your computer and a normal telephone connection ("Hi Granny"!). The quality may be a bit lower, depending on the software and the traffic on the Internet, e.g. you might have an echo. The suppliers may also offer you additional services, such as voicemail and "portable" telephone numbers for a fee. |
